Soul Food History

The term soul food became popular in the 1960s, when the word soul became used in connection with African American culture^. The origins of soul food, however, are much older and can be traced back to Africa. Foods such as rice, guinea corn, and okra all common elements in West African cuisine were introduced to the Americas as a result of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, and became dietary staples among enslaved Africans.
When the European slave trade began in the early 1400s, the diet of newly enslaved Africans changed on the long journeys from their homeland. It was during this time that some of the indigenous crops of Africa began showing up in the Americas.
Slave owners fed their slaves as cheaply as possible, often with throwaway foods from the plantation, forcing slaves to make do with the ingredients at hand. In slave households, vegetables were the tops of turnips and beets and dandelions. They also developed recipes which used lard; cornmeal; and offal, discarded cuts of meat such as pigs’ feet, oxtail, tripe and skin. Cooks added onions, garlic, thyme, and bay leaf to enhance the flavors. Some slaves supplemented their meager diets by maintaining small plots made available to them to grow their own vegetables, and many engaged in subsistence fishing and hunting, which yielded wild game for the table.
To a far greater degree than anyone realizes, several of the most important food dishes of the Southeastern Native American Indians live on today in the “soul food” eaten by both black and white Southerners. Southerners cook their beans and field peas by boiling them, as did the Indians … like the Indians they cure their meat and smoke it over hickory coals.
Since it was illegal in many states for enslaved Africans to learn to read or write soul food recipes and cooking techniques tended to be passed along orally, until after slavery. The first soul food cookbook is attributed to Abby Fisher, entitled What Mrs. Fisher Knows About Old Southern Cooking and published in 1881. Good Things to Eat was published in 1911; the author, Rufus Estes, was a former slave who worked for the Pullman railway car service. Many other cookbooks were written by African Americans during that time, but as they were not widely distributed; most are now lost.
At the center of African American food celebrations is the value of sharing and making the most of whatever is there.

RoseMarie was “discovered” in a New York shopping mall at age 18 and became a well recognized video/print models of the 2000’s.

 After making her first cover appearance on Raheem Devaughn’s album cover she went on to pose for the French multi-billion dollar mobile communications company L’esprit as the face of “Green Network” with full billboard advertising coverage throughout France and Europe; In the U.S further nationwide campaigns followed with Supreme and Sensual hair products.

Major artists such as Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, 50 Cent amongst others have featured RoseMarie in their videos (without booty shaking).

Her presence on screen has led to various appearances on TV shows: Law & Order, Gossip Girls and As The World Turns, Films: Cadillac Records, Notorious and I Am Legend, with further projects featuring Wesley Snipes plus additional roles including vocal appearances planned for 2010.

I caught up with Jules ‘Ask Your Girl’ Zambon at the Ask Your Girl “360” event;

Erim – How is everything going for you at the moment?

Jules – Yeah, all good man! Just workin’ real hard, and trying to stay focussed and level headed..

Erim – What are the current projects you are working on?

Jules – I’m promoting a young boxer called Ryan “Run ‘em over” Charles, who is currently the university heavyweight champion, and we’re looking forward to potentially reaching the Olympics in 2012.

Obviously there’s also Ask Your Girl clothing, which is at the forefront of my movement.

Erim – Ask Your Girl is primarily a clothing brand, but what other aspects of urban culture does your brand cover?

Jules – Music, fashion, film, sports and events. Ask Your Girl is a multi-platform 360 degree brand!

Erim – We are here today at the Ask Your Girl 360 event, was it you that came up with the idea and put it all together?

Jules – Well, events like this are not new.. I have a lot of people around me that do a lot of things on different platforms, so I then thought if I were to bring it all together It would be beneficial for the consumer.

So  if a customer wants to get their hair done, go shopping, get a tattoo or get some good food, they can do it all in one day here at the 360 event! All of the customers that have been here today have been pleased with what we have put together and have gone home happy!

Erim – I have seen numerous celebs wear Ask Your Girl clothing, but if you could have anyone in the world endorse your product, who would it be and why?

Jules – I would say…David Beckham because he is very influential within the fashion industry and he’s a world renowned sports star! He also knows what it’s all about, performing under pressure!

Erim – Who was your biggest inspiration when starting up Ask Your Girl?

Jules – I don’t even know to be honest. I think it’s more that – I’m so hard on myself, I kind of inspire myself.

I drive myself to get up in the morning and make something happen, or make some kind of wave. Its more self motivation and inspiration for me…

But in terms of people I aspire to be like, it would be; Jay-Z, Richard Branson, Ghandi, Martin Luther King.

I just want to be revolutionary, coz it’s the same whether you are doing business or politics – It’s still a campaign and a movement and you need a good team of people behind you.

Erim – Other than your Ask Your Girl, what would be your all time favourite brand?

Jules – Favourite brand? S***…. I prefer non-branding clothing to be honest. I like natural colours and that, but if I had to pick one brand it would have to be adidas coz they are just timeless in everything they do!

Erim – What your favourite item you have ever bought yourself?

Jules – It would probably have to be one of my own pieces, a shirt from my 2010 collection! So yeah, look out for that this summer!

Erim – what the most amount of money you have ever spent of an item of clothing or pair of shoes?

Jules – Probably something dumb… (Laughs) I’m not really a big spender, especially since I started my own label, but if I had to pick one thing it would probably be a pair of Prada’s or something…

Erim – Lastly, what does the future hold for yourself and Ask Your Girl?

Jules – There’s a whole variety of things! A world of things! At the moment I’m not trying to think too far ahead, I’m just dealing with what I have to deal with right now, and in the back of my mind I know what I will do if those things come into place.

I’m dealing with the game at hand, which is the most important thing right now…

Erim – Thanks bro
